Legendary Notre Dame fencing coach Mike DeCicco passed away at 4:30 Friday afternoon of congestive heart failure at Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. He was 85 years old.
The visitation for DeCicco will be Tuesday from 2-8pm at Palmer Funeral Home on Cleveland Road in South Bend. The funeral will be at 9:30am Wednesday at the Notre Dame Basilica.
DeCicco was a remarkable fencer at Notre Dame in the 40's and went on to building the fencing program into the national power it is today as its head coach.
DeCicco is the winningest coach in any sport in Notre Dame history, posting a remarkable record of 680-45. He led Notre Dame to five national championships.
He also was instrumental in running the Academic Services program for athletes at Notre Dame, helping to expand academic advising to all student-athletes, not just football players.
He is survived by his wife, the former Polly Romeo, and his five children — Linda, Della, Nick, Michelle and Mike.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
