Kelly knows Irish need more out of their offense

Brian Kelly expects his defense to once again be a dominant force in 2013 but he knows Notre Dame will need a lot more from the offense if the Irish want to be successful.

"We have to score more points," Kelly explains. "We did not score enough and we were not effective enough in the red zone. Those two things are pretty clear."

Coming off a loss in the national championship game in January, Notre Dame opens the 2013 season Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium against Temple. That game shouldn't be an issue for the Irish--but could be a trial run for the new look offense they are putting together. Offensive coordinator Chuck Martin is taking over play calling duties from Kelly and Tommy Rees is returning to the starting role at quarterback with Everett Golson suspended from the university for the fall semester.

"A bigger piece falls on the offense this year than it does the defense," Kelly says. "If the defense can stay in the same area code as it did last year and we really up our offensive output, then we can have the kind of year we are all looking forward to."

Notre Dame and Temple will kickoff at 3:30 Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium. You can watch the game live on WNDU. NewsCenter 16 gets you started with Countdown to Kickoff. Join Jeff, Chuck, Gabby and I live from the Stadium for a one hour pre-game show starting at 2pm Saturday.
