Kelly: Rees' role remains in relief; won't rotate quarterbacks

Brian Kelly said Saturday night that, "Everett Golson is our starter."

He then smiled and waited for the next question.

For the 2nd time this season, veteran Tommy Rees entered the game in relief and helped lead the Irish to victory as Notre Dame improved to 4-0 with a 13-6 win over Michigan at Notre Dame Stadium Saturday.

Notre Dame is now ranked 10th in the country for the first time since November 2006.

Kelly said Sunday he has no intentions of rotating Rees and Golson and that the plan moving forward is for Golson to be the guy to start and finish each game.

"We want to go with one quarterback but we have a freshman quarterback that is experiencing what it’s like to be a young quarterback," Kelly said Sunday in his day after the game press conference. “I look at it as supporting Everett with Tommy. If we need to go that way, we will go that way because its going well.”

Kelly says he turned to Rees because Golson was getting "careless" and doing things that were not consistent with what they are used to seeing from Everett. Golson was pulled after the 5th series of the game and throwing two interceptions.

Kelly obviously has shown he has no problems using Rees, who has played in each game since serving a one game suspension in the season opener in Dublin for a May arrest.

"Certainly we are 4-0," Kelly said of his confidence of turning to Rees if needed. "Having Tommy in there the two games he played, we've done well."

Kelly noticed that the Irish crowd gave Rees a warmer reception than the boos he received when he entered the game against Purdue back in week two.

Kelly feels his team will be better in November than it is now and that will center around the growth of Golson at quarterback. Kelly feels his 4-0 team needs to build "consistency" on offense and that's the element that is currently missing from that side of the ball.

Notre Dame is on the bye this week before playing Miami at Soldier Field in Chicago on October 6th.
