Special teams was the name of the game on Friday night as Notre Dame and Ohio State combined for six power-play goals and one four-on-four goal as the Buckeyes handed the Irish a 6-3 loss in front of 5,779 at Value City Arena.
The loss is the 6th in seven games for the Irish Icers. Notre Dame falls to 16-11-0 overall and 12-7-0-0 in the CCHA. Ohio State improves to 11-11-5 overall and 10-6-3-0 in conference play.
Ohio State scored four power-play goals on nine chances while the Irish picked up two on five chances and the one four-on-four goal. The Buckeyes’ totals were season highs against Notre Dame in both categories
The Buckeyes were led by Ryan Dzingel who had a pair of power-play goals on the night. Nick Oddo chipped in a goal and two assists while Alex Szczechura, Anthony Greco and Jason DaSilva also scored for OhioState. Mario Lucia, Kevin Lind and Bryan Rust had the Notre Dame goals.
The two teams will meet for the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Value City Arena. This will be the final regular-season CCHA meeting between the Irish and the Buckeyes.
