Irish Icers fall to Miami 3-1

The Miami RedHawks got two second-period goals from Steven Spinell and Blake Coleman 30 seconds apart and freshman goaltender Ryan McKay stopped 20 of the 21 shots on the way to a 3-1 win over Notre Dame Friday night at Steve Cady Arena.

Marc Hagel scored the final RedHawk goal into an open net. Freshman center Steven Fogarty notched the lone Notre Dame goal, getting his fifth of the season with less than three minutes left in the game. Goaltender Steven Summerhays finished with 19 saves on the night.

The loss drops the 12th ranked Irish to 18-12-1 on the season and 14-8-1-1- in CCHA play. Miami, ranked third in the nation goes to 19-7-5 overall and 14-5-4-4 in the conference. The RedHawks have 50 points in the CCHA and are in first place, two points ahead of second-place Western Michigan (48) and six ahead of Notre Dame in third place.

The two teams will be off on Saturday as they travel to Chicago, Ill., to prepare for the OfficeMax Hockey City Classic game at 12:05 p.m. (CT) on Sunday at historic Soldier Field. This will be the first outdoor game for the Irish in the 45 years they have played at the Division I level. Wisconsin and Minnesota will play in the second game of the doubleheader. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Detroit and Comcast Chicago.
