The Buchanan football team returns just a handful of starters on each side of the ball but that doesn't mean the Bucks are lowering their standards in 2013.
3rd year head coach Mike Kuntz expects his squad to once again compete for a playoff spot as it looks to win six games to do so.
Kuntz has reason to be confident. One of those returning starters is senior running back Doug Freeman, who has compiled 3,200 rushing yards in his first three seasons.
"He's one of the best players in the state of Michigan," Kuntz says.
Freeman is also an excellent cornerback.
"We're young, fast and we should a chip on our shoulders," Freeman says of what he likes about this year's team. "We can prove ourselves against any opponent we go against. We should be able to fight--have some grit to us."
Buchanan is in its final season in the 4-team Lakeland Conference. They will transition into the new 10-team BCS (Berrien Cass St. Joe County) Conference next season.
In the meantime, Kuntz admits scheduling has been a bit of nightmare this season to fill out the program's nine regular season games.
Buchanan opens at home against Jackson Lumen Christi on August 30th.
