Detroit goalie Osgood announces retirement

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood is retiring after being sidelined by injury most of last season.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood is retiring after being sidelined by injury most of last season.

The 38-year-old Osgood, who won three Stanley Cups with Detroit, announced his plans Tuesday. He'll remain with the organization, helping scout and develop young goalies.

Osgood played only 11 games last season as a backup to Jimmy Howard. He was later sidelined after undergoing sports hernia surgery in January. His retirement leaves Detroit searching for another backup goalie. The Red Wings recently re-signed Joey MacDonald to be the team's No. 3 goaltender.

Osgood was the starting goalie during Detroit's Stanley Cup runs in 1998 and 2008. The Red Wings also won the title in 1997 with Osgood as a backup.
