It is almost hard to believe but college basketball season is already underway. The Irish started practice last Friday after a new NCAA rule was put in place allowing teams to start practice 30 days before their first exhibition game, something head coach Mike Brey isn't exactly excited about.

Brey said "I don't agree with this rule. I love the hard fast rule of October 13th or 15th. We have just had so much summer involvement with them that I don't know if we have let that digest to really evaluate how much we have done in the summer."

He then added "Having said that, we can use that productively and we are going to kind of work our way toward full barrel practice starting the week of October 14th."

The extended practice time will be extremely valuable for incoming freshmen like Marian High School grad Demetrius Jackson. Jackson says he is ready and excited for the season to tip off.

"This is what I have dreamed of as a young basketball player growing up,” Jackson said. “Now I have the opportunity to have the things I want to do in my life and that is play basketball."

Coach Brey says he can already see growth from Jackson. "I have been so impressed with his maturity handling his business academically, meetings, and wanting to get better."

Brey added that there are still some areas they want him to smooth out in his game. Brey said taking care of the ball and not thinking too much are the kind of things they hope to see him improve on.

"My teammates and my coaches have really helped me,” Jackson said. “It is a big adjustment with the speed and being a young point guard trying to get the hang of everything. My coaches have given me great guidance and my teammates have given me great guidance and helped me learn the ropes."

Coach Brey believes Jackson will be a vital asset this year saying "He is making great progress and he will be a very key part of things this season."

Jackson and the Irish will host Indianapolis October 28th at 7 p.m. in their first exhibition game.
