Culver Community and Knox departing Northern State Conference

A shakeup is coming to a major area high school conference.

Culver Community and Knox formally submitted their resignations from the Northern State Conference at the NSC Board meeting Monday night.

The departures are not immediate, however.

That leaves the conference with six teams, led by football powerhouse Jimtown. Bremen, Glenn, LaVille, New Prairie and Triton are the other current members.

The question now is whether the remaining six will remain together and add a few more teams to fill out the conference. If one or two of the remaining six decides to leave, that could cause an implosion of the conference.

I'm told LaVille has been asked to join the new conference with Knox and Culver but that the Lancers prefer to remain in the NSC.

Jimtown is the key figure. The football powerhouse in Elkhart can likely keep the conference together if they want to stay pat. If the Jimmies decide they want to leave, the conference could be done.

Another factor may be with New Prairie. The Cougars are bigger than all the other schools in the NSC and could explore the possibility of moving to a bigger league like the Northern Indiana Conference.

Schools the Northern State Conference could pursue include Rochester, Tippy Valley and Fairfield. A move to the NSC for those schools could increase local media exposure from television stations and newspapers because they would be playing more teams in the Michiana viewing area than they currently do.

Of course, all of that is speculation. The one thing that is fact is that Culver and Knox are leaving the NSC.
