Cavemen football team helps build home

Mishawaka, Ind. Last football season, no area team had more success in Michiana than Mishawaka.

The Cavemen captured the hearts of the Princess City with a tremendous run to the state football finals.

One month before the start of the 2013 football season, Bart Curtis' boys are giving back to the community in another big way.

The Cavemen joined with the Habitat for Humanity of St. Joe County to help build a home for one hard-working family.

For the past three years, the team has helped with other projects throughout the community.

But today, players learned how to install siding for the newly constructed house and the garage.

The Caveman used this as a team building and communication exercise while off the field.

But to Head Coach Curtis and the players, it means much more.

"Well, you know what, volunteer and mandatory are two words that we don't really use because neither of them work,” Coach Curtis said. “So, we just tell them hey you need to be here on this date and this is what's going to happen and you guys understand how important it is. So, we think it's pretty darn important for our kids and they know when we think something is important they'll be a part of it."

Senior linebacker Cameron Thomas was excited to participate.

“Anyway we can help and give back to the community. I mean, building a house for somebody is just the thought of that is nice. She'll be able to have somewhere to stay, people's qualities like how they work reflects on the field, like I mean, if we're out here working hard we'll work hard on the field. If were out here slacking, we're going to slack on the field, but I don't think we're going to do that so it show's what we're going to be able to do, hopefully."
