Braxston Cave ready to leave the nest in pursuit of NFL dreams

The opening round of the NFL Draft starts on Thursday, but Penn High School graduate and Notre Dame senior, Braxston Cave, likely won’t hear his name called until Saturday’s later rounds.

Despite the wait, the hometown kid is still excited about closing in on another one of his lifelong goals.
"It’s been a dream since I was really little. Go to Penn, come to Notre Dame and make it to the NFL," says Braxston.

The Granger native made his impact with the Kingsmen in high school and then starred at Notre Dame where he was instrumental in Notre Dame returning to the national title game this year.

"Finally bring the program back to where it’s supposed to be. Where we came in freshman, where we thought we'd be right away,” says Cave, “Five years later we got there and its proud moment to look back and think you are part of it."

But the 300 pound center who called out for his parents after the USC game last season is finally ready to leave the nest, and he says he’s ready to go anywhere.

Another Michiana native and star Notre Dame athlete, Skylar Diggins, is also leaving the nest in pursuit of a professional basketball career in Tulsa. It seems that Tulsa is not exactly where Braxton wants to end up.

"Since there is not a football team in Tulsa, I hope I don't end up in Tulsa," Cave said with a laugh.

So where will Braxston go and when will he be drafted? The possibilities are endless.

"Being home now, it's not as busy as it was before. It gives more time to sit around and think about it and try to visualize where you going to go and you have no idea," a nerve wracking idea for someone who has never stayed away from home for too long.

"Very, very,” says Braxton when asked to think about where he’ll end up, “I talk to my agent who says don't worry about it because there is nothing I can do. But that's my life so obviously I'm going to worry about it."

Braxston could go anywhere from the 3rd to 7th round but for him—he just wants the opportunity.

“I just can't wait to hear my name called on the TV," he says, and when his name is called, so begins the next journey for this hometown kid.
