The Bethel College men's basketball team faced local rival Indiana University-South Bend in the Crosstown Showdown and came away with a 73-62 victory.
Both teams were slow out of the gates with neither team getting much offensive production as Bethel led 5-2 after the first five minutes of the game.
Zach Miller would rattle off the next five points to give the Pilots a 10-2 lead at the 13:42 mark. The Titans would get a free throw and a bucket to bring the hosts to within five points where it would remain for the next three minutes.
IUSB would then score four straight points to give Bethel a slim 12-11 advantage at the 9:49 mark before taking their first lead of the game at 17-16 with 8:12 remaining in the half .They would then get a steal and bucket from Alanzo Bass who was fouled in the act. Bass made the free throw to give IUSB a 20-16 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first stanza.
The Titan lead would grow to 25-17 at the 6:14mark before Jordan Bowerman connected on a basket to stop the run and bring Bethel to within six. On the ensuing play Alanzo Bass would connect on a perimeter shot to give the Titans their largest lead of the game at nine with 5:02 left before intermission.
The Pilots clawed their way back over the next two minutes thanks to the efforts of Jordan Bowerman who gave Bethel a 29-28 lead with 2:42 left.
The final two minutes were evenly played until a three-pointer by IUSB with 0:22 seconds remaining gave the Titans a 34-31 lead at the break.
The second half started out with IUSB coming out hot scoring the first four points to go up 38-31 in the first minute of a second half. Jordan Bowerman would knock in a pair of free throws before Alanzo Bass would hit yet another three-pointer to give IUSB a 41-33 lead. The lead would continue to grow as the Titans took another nine point advantage leading 44-35 at the 16:07 mark.
A Titan basket at the 13:40 mark would extend their lead to the largest of the night at 50-39. BC would answer as Zach Miller sank back-to-back three pointers and bring Bethel to within five midway through the second half.
The Pilots would then go on a tear courtesy of Bowerman and Miller to give Bethel their first lead of the second half 58-55 with 7:45 left to play. BC would increase their lead on free throws from Travis Smith to go up 60-55 with 7:05 left to play.
IUSB responded with a huge perimeter shot by Alanzo Bass to cut Bethel's lead to two with 5:40 left to play.
Both teams would then play evenly for the next three minutes until free throws by Zach Miller and another basket by Jordan Bowerman extended the Pilot lead to 69-62 with just under a minute left to play.
Bethel would close it out at the free throw line to hang on for the 73-62 victory despite shooting only 35 percent from the field.
The Pilots were led by Zach Miller who scored 22 points, three assists and two steals. Senior Jordan Bowerman had 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Matt Schauss also chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.
Alanzo Bass led IUSB with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
"I thought Travis (Smith) did an excellent job coming off the bench to give us a boost defensively," stated head coach Mike Lightfoot. "He gave us the boost we were desperately needing and did the little things that made the difference in the game."
With the win, the Pilots improve the all-time series record to 56-6 over IUSB.
