Ara, Lou reflect on their national championship teams

Notre Dame's two living national championship football coaches were back in South Bend on Thursday to honor Gurley Leep founder Mike Leep at the Center for History's Annual Dinner.

Ara Parseghian and Lou Holtz will be plenty busy this weekend too as they gather with players from their national championship squads.

Lou's Lads will host a special event Friday night in honor of the 25th anniversary of Notre Dame's last national championship. Holtz has fond memories of what it took to win it all and what prevented his teams from winning more.

"To win a national championship you gotta be lucky," Holtz admits. "Alabama won two of them with a loss. You look at Nebraska when the ball hit the guys foot and bounced up, Colorado's fifth down. You look at us knocking down the 2 point conversion.

"In 89 and 93 we were a little bit unlucky but as long as you're competing for the championship and you look back at the players the way the played and the way they are together and what they're doing for others is my greatest asset."

Ara led Notre Dame to two national titles in 1966 and 1973. The 73 team will be honored before Saturday's game against Michigan State for its 40th anniversary.

"I'm looking forward to it," Parseghian said of the on the field celebration.

For Ara, the run in 73 very much came to life again last year.

"It was a chemistry that developed during the course of the season like we saw last year with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish--the chemistry they had, they were going to be tough to beat. Of course, that's the way the 73 team came along," Ara explained. "It didn't start out very well and all of a sudden I could see them coming together and developing as a team on both sides of the ball and that was a good football team and I'm very proud of them."

Coming up on NewsCenter 16 at 5pm on Friday, Ara and Lou will give their thoughts on the 2013 Irish football team.
