Demetrius Jones was with the Irish on Thursday, but then apparently vanished from campus on Friday.
NewsCenter 16 has learned that Jones cleaned out his room, left and told no one----not Charlie Weis nor his roommate----that he was leaving.
The source also confirms that Jones is in fact enrolled at Northern Illinois.
An independent search of the Northern Illinois online directory shows Jones' full name----Demetrius Armond Jones---listed as a student. The directory also lists the same hometown: Chicago, IL.
Jones did not travel with the Irish on Friday to Michigan. Head coach Charlie Weis issued this statement early Friday evening.
"At 2:30 [Friday], while boarding the bus to Michigan, I was notified that Demetrius Jones had decided not to make the trip. I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts."
Jones started the Irish season opener against Georgia Tech but was pulled in the 1st half.
Jimmy Clausen started last week and will start again on Saturday against Michigan.
Transfers must sit out a season before resuming their playing careers at another University.
The cutoff is being at that University by the 12th day of class.
Northern Illinois began classes on August 27th. They have had 15 days of class for this school year.
Jones would appear to have had to enroll by this past Tuesday to make it by the cutoff. If Jones was enrolled at Northern Illinois by Tuesday, he was doing so while also still practicing with the Irish. Jones practiced all week.
If it is ruled that Jones did not make the deadline, he could be forced to sit out the rest of the 2007 and the entire 2008 seasons.
