After giving up 15 sacks in two games, Charlie Weis was asked in his "Day After the Game" press conference if he's seen any positives from his young offensive lineman.
"After the first two weeks, I'm not really doing cartwheels about them," Weis said. "We have to put them in a position to produce and they have to go out there and do it."
"After two games, it would be tough for me to sit there and throw a bunch of kudos out for how we're playing."
Despite the line's play, freshman Jimmy Clausen had a solid effort in his first-ever start. Clausen was 17 of 32 for 144 yards.
"During the game, i thought he had a very calm demeanor on the sidelines when things hadn't gone so well," Weis explained. "He was always getting ready for the next series and never letting something that happened previously effect him."
"That and a combination of watching how the tape wait---I have to tell you , I''m very encouraged."
One play Weis was not encouraged about was when Travis Thomas was involved in a scuffle during a Penn State punt.
Thomas, a 5th-year senior captain, was penalized for jumping on top of PSU freshman Brett Brackett. The penalty cost the Irish valuable field position early in the game.
""that was not a very smart play," Weis said after being able to view the tape. "It had nothing to do with the outcome of the play. Its something that at the time i didn't know what happened. I did address it at the time."
"Now that I know what happened, we'll be further addressing it."
