Weis on being a player after a loss: It's miserable

When the final horn sounded on Notre Dame's worst season opening loss ever last Saturday, the state of sadness spread instantly amongst Irish fans.

But imagine being a player after such a devastating loss.

"You lose the game on Saturday, you have your family and friends around - it's miserable," Irish head coach Charlie Weis explained.

"You go home, it's miserable. Your family's miserable. Your roommates are miserable. Then you get up on Sunday and it's miserable all over again."

"You go to church and everyone says, 'well, what happened?' Then you come into meetings and it's miserable there. Then you go to the dining hall and everyone says, 'what happened?'"

And the questions do not stop with just the players.

"In my case, i go to put out the garbage and the neighbors say, 'what happened?'" Weis explained.

But Weis says it is certainly worse on the players.

"Then Monday they don't have practice," the 3rd year coach said. "It's another day they go to class all day and think about it. From Saturday to Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, you're just living in that misery because you can't do anything about it physically."

"All you can do to deal with it is psychologically and mentally, emotionally," Weis continued. "I think the best thing that happens to any athlete after a loss is getting back on the field."

The Irish players had three days back on the field for practice this week. It ended Thursday night. The team leaves for Happy Valley on Friday afternoon.

The real getting back on the field will take place on Saturday at 6pm in State College, PA against Penn State.

Sports Director Jeff Jeffers will have live reports from Happy Valley on Friday and Saturday beginning on NewsCenter 16 at 5 on Friday.
