Weis to name starter on Tuesday

Charlie Weis doesn't know who the starting QB will be for next Saturday's game against Penn State.

But he will know by Tuesday, and so will the rest of the country.

Weis told the media on Sunday he won't keep the week 2 starter a secret. All 3 quarterbacks are in the running, according to Weis.

The head coach explained it was important to now name a starter ahead of time instead of keeping it a secret.

"When you lose 33-3, I think we need to rally the troops, circle the wagons," Weis explained. "All those other phrases that you've used in different sports, we'll its time for us to do them.

"It always starts with a foundation of this is what we are going to do."

So who will it be?

Week 1 starter Demetrius Jones attempted just 3 passes, fumbled twice and is more of a runner than a passer.

That goes against the traditional Charlie Weis QB---which is more like Evan Sharpley or Jimmy Clausen.

Sharpley was 10 of 13 passing, but also fumbled. He did lead the Irish to its only points.

Then there's Clausen, who coach Weis admitted was not healthy at the start of camp, but now is.

"I expect Jimmy to play this year," Weis said. "That doesn't mean I don't expect Demetrius to play or Evan to play but there's no doubt in my mind that I expect [Jimmy] to play this year or else I wouldn't be using him."

Clausen came into the game with the Irish down by 30. The frosh completed four of his six pass attempts.

"It was a perfect opportunity to get him under fire, to get him some snaps," Weis said.

"Whether it's this week or what ever point down the road that you decide to put him in there---when it's a real 0-0 game, you don't want it be the first time he's ever taken a snap."
