Michael Vick has agreed to plead guilty to a dogfighting conspiracy charge. The move puts his NFL career in jeopardy.

The felony offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, although federal sentencing guidelines most likely would call for less. Legal experts say 12 to 18 months is more realistic for Vick.

Vick's lawyer says he's paying a high price for letting friends influence his behavior, but that he's agreed to "accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made."

The NFL, meanwhile, noted in a statement that what Vick told prosecutors wasn't the same as what he told the league's commissioner after he was charged.

Though Vick has been barred from the Atlanta Falcons training camp, the league says it has asked the team to withhold any further action until it wraps up its own investigation.

Vick's three co-defendants in the case have already entered guilty pleas, and had agreed to testify against Vick if the case went to trial.
