"Anyone that is going to see a football game in Elkhart this year is going to be at this one," 17-Year Memorial coach Phil Teegarden says.
As always, the Battle of Elkhart kickoffs the start of Friday Night Football in Northern Indiana. Central will host Memorial at 7PM at Rice Field. It's the Pizza Hut Spotlight Game of the Week.
Memorial has won 3 of the last 4 meetings between the cross-town rivals, including a 21-14 victory last season. It was one of only 3 wins for the Chargers all year.
"The first game is always a nerve-racking experience for coaches and players alike," Teegarden explains. " When the first game is your cross-town rival it makes it doubly exciting and doubly nerve-racking as well."
With 243 career wins in 41 seasons as a head coach, Teegarden has seen a lot of big-time games. He says the Memorial-Central clash has a special feel to it every year based on on how much it means to the community.
"It's the kind of crowd Elkhart football used to have in the glory days, so to speak," Teegarden says. "It's the kind of crowd every high school kid would like to play in front of because everyone shows up for the Central-Memorial game."
Memorial-Central will be one of 7 games highlighted on Friday Night Football, premiering this Friday night on Newscenter 16 at 11.
