The man who made the most famous kick in Irish football history is dead at the age of 47. Harry Oliver had battled cancer for the past two years. He died Wednesday in his hometown of Cincinnati.

A left-footed kicker, Oliver booted the game-winning field goal as time ran out against Michigan in 1980. The 51-yard kick gave the Irish a 29-27 victory. Although he was successful in his career after that kick, Oliver is best remembered for that September afternoon when his boot to the south endzone just cleared the crossbar.

Oliver was a graduate of Cincinnati's Moeller High School where he played for future Irish head coach, Gerry Faust
