Glavine wins 300th game against Cubs

Sunday night's rubber game between the Cubs and Mets at Wrigley had about 100 storylines.

Mets pitcher Tom Glavine became the 23rd player to ever win 300 games, the Cubs failed to get back to first, Alfonso Soriano was injured and Kerry Wood made his return.

In his last start, Glavine left the game with a lead only to see the bullpen blow it.

This time Glavine helped himself out, picking up an RBI single in the 2nd to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

There was a scary moment in the 3rd for the Cubs. Alfonso Soriano was rounding 2nd after a single by Ryan Theriot when he came up limp, apparently injurying his right leg. The early word is that Soriano strained his right quad.

The Cubs got some good news in the 7th. Kerry Wood made his return to the team. He gave up one hit, striking out his final batter in one full inning of work.

Glavine, meanwhile, pitched 6 1/3 innings, leaving the game with a 5-1 lead in the 7th. After two runs scored in the inning, Notre Dame grad Aaron Heilman came in to stop the bleeding.

Heilman got the Mets out the jam with a 5-3 lead as Glavine cheered on from the dugout.

The Mets picked up a few more insurance runs heading to the bottom of the 9th when closer Billy Wagner came on in a non-save situation to close things out for Glavine.

Wagner did the job and Glavine picked up win number 300. It was quite the celebration on the field as Glavine celebrated with his teammates and his family.

With the loss, the Cubs failed to move back into a tie for first in the NL Central. The Brewers blew a 5-run 9th inning lead earlier in the day to lose to the Phillies 8-6 in 11 innings.
