When a team goes 27-5 for an entire season, you know that team is not only a lock for the NCAA tourney but is also assured of home court advantage. That's the situation for the Irish women's basketball team.
It was announced Monday evening that Notre Dame is the number two seed in the Kansas City Regional and will play Cleveland State on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion. It's a 2:30 tip.
The announcement was a little anti-climactic as the 7-10 matchup between Wisconsin and Vermont flashed up on the screen first with the location being listed as Notre Dame. Some Irish players figured out that meant they were the #2 seed at that point, while others still didn't make the discovery.
Even with some of the team knowing, it didn't stop an epic eruption as the Irish jumped up and down in celebration of receiving a seed they felt they earned and deserved.
The top seed in the Kansas City Regional is Nebraska. The other top seeds are UConn, Stanford and Tennessee. The Huskies and Lady Vols are on the same side of the bracket.
The Irish cannot play the Huskies until the national championship. UConn has defeated Notre Dame three times already this season.
Seven teams from the Big East qualified for the tourney.
