All that separates Chuck Martin from being Notre Dame's next defensive backs coach is a meeting with University President Father John Jenkins, a source in Grand Rapids tells NewsCenter 16.
New Irish coach Brian Kelly and Martin, the current head coach at Grand Valley State, came to an agreement last week, according to the source.
Martin was Kelly's defensive coordinator when Kelly was the head coach at GVSU. When Kelly left for Central Michigan, Martin took over the head coaching duties, leading Grand Valley State to two Division II National Championships. The Lakers lost in the title game this season.
We are told a formal announcement may not come until after the new year.
Martin previously turned down offers to be on Kelly's staff at Central Michigan and Cincinnati. Even before Kelly was named the Notre Dame head coach, Martin said he would not say no if Kelly called this time.
Running backs coach Tony Alford was the only assistant from the Charlie Weis' regime to remain with the Irish. Reports also indicate that Kelly is bringing back former Irish assistant Mike Denbrock to coach the offensive line. Denbrock was an assistant under Kelly at Grand Valley State and later served under Ty Willingham here at Notre Dame.
The spot for Denbrock opened up when Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn took the head coaching job at Buffalo. As NewCenter 16 reported the day Kelly was hired, Kelly hoped to bring Quinn with him to Notre Dame as his offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Quinn has been an assistant under Kelly for all 19 years of Kelly's head coaching tenure.
Kelly is expected to bring in Bob Diaco (Defensive Coordinator and linebackers), Mike Elston (defensive line) and Greg Forrest (Quarterbacks) from his old staff at Cincinnati, if not more.
Kelly says he will not name any assistants from his old staff until after they coach the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day.
