Newman Struggles at Coca-Cola 600

It looked like it was going to be a great week for South Bend's Ryan Newman.

On Thursday, Newman qualified first for the Coca-Cola 600.

But Newman's lead would be relinquished after 10 laps and he would slowly drift back in the field. Halfway through, he would blow an engine during a pit stop and see his day end. Newman would finish a disappointing 37th.

The day was marred by accidents. On lap 53, a 16 car pile up started when Jimmie Johnson lost a tire.

10 laps later, LaPorte's Tony Raines knocked Nextel Cup points leader Jeff Gordon out of the race.

Raines would be ok and finish 14th. South Bend's David Stremme finished 17th.

Casey Mears took the checkered flag for his first ever Nextel Cup victory.
