The Cubs enjoyed a 5-1 lead in the 9th on Thursday at Shea STadium when reliever Ryan Dempster was brought in to get some work. What happened after that is another chapter in the futility that is Chicago Cubs baseball.
Dempster couldn't find homeplate. He barked at the umpire, he walked batters, he gave up hits and left the game. Scott Eyre came in and threw three pitchers. Two of the pitches produced RBI and New York scored five in the 9th to win, 6-5, over the Cubs.
What made the loss even harder to take was that the Mets didn't start regulars Jose Reyes, David Wright or Carlos Beltran.
The Cubs begin a weekend series on Friday against the White Sox at Wrigley
