When Notre Dame was placed on the same side of the bracket as DePaul, not many gave them much chance of making it to the Big East Championship game.
But the Irish pulled off the big upset Friday and advanced to the Big East finals against Louisville. The winning ways ended Saturday as the Irish lost to Louisville 3-2 in the championship game.
Courtney Moore gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when she hit a 2-run home run off Irish pitcher Brittney Bargar.
Bargar settled down from there, pitching her 26th complete game of the year, striking out 6 while giving up just one more run on the day.
At the plate, the Irish could not get anything going thru the first 4 innings off of Louisville start Kristen Wadwell. Wadwell retired 13 batters in a row, taking a no-hitter into the 5th before being replaced by Kassie Stanfill. Beth Northway would give the Irish its first hit of the game in the 5th.
In the 6th, the Irish would make their rally. A Louisville throwing error would give ND its first run of the game. Then Heather Johnson sat back on an off-speed pitch and singled to left field driving in Stephanie Brown to the tie game at 2.
But in the bottom of the 6th, Brooke McCrain drove in the game-winning run with a RBI single down the right field line to take the 3-2 lead.
In the 7th, Christine Lux led off with a double. Lux would advance to 3rd but be left stranded there as Notre Dame's final two batters would strike out to end the game.
