For once, looking bad was good.
The Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County hosted the "Bad Pants Open" at South Bend Country Club today. Nearly $40,000 was raised. All the money will stay in St. Joseph County to help those with diabetes.
The theme of the day was to wear the worst-looking pants possible. Many golfers came up with some great "outfits." Some searched for pants for weeks, others borrowed a pair.
"It felt a little weird at first," says Ryan Massengill, who borrowed his pants from his brother-in-law. "But once I saw some of the other pants, mine actually looked alright compared to those."
23-year-old Steven Jarrett started the day off wearing some hideous looking pants. But by hole number 4, his "pants" turned into "shorts." The heat got to Jarrett so much that he took a pair of scissors and cut down the pants. It certainly made them look worse...or better, depending on how you look at it.
One man even wore his wife's pajamas. He said they were pretty comfortable and improved his golf game.
"I have to thank my wife Courtney for them," Shannon Hyduk said. "She said 'these will go well for tomorrow'. I took them and its flying and we're excited about it."
"It's a great opportunity to support [diabetes]," Hyduk continued. "I know people with diabetes. It's good to try and find a cure for it and get the money out there to help them."
