All-Time Classic at Frank Eck Stadium

It was quite the scene at Frank Eck Stadium on Wednesday Night.

At the end of 7 innings, the scoreboard read all 0's. Both pitchers, ND's Sam Elam and Purdue's Matt Bischoff, took no-hitters into the 8th inning. Bischoff's was a perfect game. Neither player picked up a no-no, however, in a wild game that ended on a Danny Dressman RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to bring in the only run of the game in Notre Dame's 1-0 win.

Elam took his no-hitter into the 8th. He struck out his 8th and 9th batters of the night to start the inning before Alex Jaffee came up with two away. Jaffee lined a single up the middle to put the first non-zero on the scoreboard. Elam finished the night pitching the game of his life: 9 innings, 9 strikeouts, 0 runs and just that one hit.

Bischoff took a perfect game into the 9th with the score 0-0. After 24 consecutive outs, it appeared the perfect game was over on a 3-1 pitch to Jeremy Barnes, but the umpire called a controversial strike. On the very next pitch, Barnes made it one better---ending the perfect game AND the no-hitter with a single up the middle. Bischoff got out of the inning and finished his evening with 7 strikeouts, 0 runs and just that one base runner.

In the 10th with the score 0-0, both teams brought on new pitchers. Tony Langford pitched a 1-2-3 top half for the Irish.

Matt Jansen came on for Purdue in the bottom of the 10th. Matt Weglarz picked up a big hit and would find himself at 3rd when Danny Dressman came to the plate. Dressman then lined a one out single to left field, Weglarz scored and the Irish celebrated.

It was the team's 6th win in 7 games. The Irish are 19-17 on the year. They will have Thursday off before hosting West Virginia in a big 3-game series.

Had Elam picked up the no-hitter, it would have been the first for the Irish since 1988 when Brian Piotrowicz piched a 7-inning no-no. It would have been the team's first 9-inning no-hitter since 1938.
