The #4/7 Notre Dame women's soccer team has advanced to the title game of the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championship with a 2-1 overtime win over St. John's in the league semifinals on Friday night at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. Sophomore defender/tri-captain Jessica Schuveiller scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 left in the first overtime period, propelling the Fighting Irish to the conference championship game for the 13th time.
Junior midfielder Rose Augustin set up both Notre Dame goals with pinpoint free kicks into the penalty area, the second connecting with Schuveiller for a snap header from eight yards out that found the lower right corner of the net for her second goal of the year.
Junior forward and 2009 BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year Lauren Fowlkes got Notre Dame on the board with her ninth goal of the season in the 10th minute. However, St. John's tied it in the 69th minute off a corner kick that was headed in, possibly by a Fighting Irish defender, although the Red Storm's Nicole Doran was officially credited with the score.
Notre Dame (16-3-1), which is now unbeaten in 14 straight games and has won eight in a row, will go in search of its 12th BIG EAST postseason title on Sunday at noon (ET) when it takes on #10 Marquette in Storrs, Conn.
