It was certainly a case of good news and bad news for Notre Dame when it comes to its injury report.

The bad news is that backup quarterback Dayne Crist will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL and will undergo surgery on Friday. Crist is expected to be out 4-6 months and will almost certainly miss sprint practice, but be back in time for the fall.

With Crist out, 5th year Evan Sharpley moves up to the backup spot with sophomore wide receiver John Goodman becoming the emergency quarterback.

The good news is that a guy the Irish thought would also be out for the season is back and ready to go.

Star wide receiver Michael Floyd, who missed the last six weeks with a broken collar bone, is cleared to play and will be in action Saturday when the Irish host Navy at the Stadium.

Before his injury, Floyd was second in the nation in receiving.

"I'm really excited," Floyd said Tuesday night. "I'm excited for the team and whatever I can do to help the team out, I will do. I'm excited to be out there and showing my teammates I'm ready to go."

Floyd definitely was showing a lot on the field--in his efforts on the field and his constant chatter about being back.

"You heard him hooting and hollering," Irish head coach Charlie Weis said about Floyd's excitement.

"Michael called his mom up to make sure that we were all on the same page. Once he got cleared to go, you know, I still let Michael make the call whether or not this was the week or not."

"He talked to his mom. Talked to me. Came back to me and said, I'm ready to go. Wasn't too long before I was getting a text from No. 7. He might have been as happy as No. 3 was. I think No. 7 might have been just as happy."

Number 7---quarterback Jimmy Clausen---now has arguably the best receiver in college football (Michael Floyd) returning alongside arguably the best wide receiver in college football (Golden Tate).

The combo should be beyond dangerous.

"I love Golden---he makes spectacular plays," Floyd said. "It takes the stress off of him and I think he'll continue doing what he's been doing--make all those big plays."

Fellow wide receiver Robby Parris is expected to return this week as well after being out with a leg injury.

Starting running back Armando Allen continues to nurse an ankle injury as is day-to-day. Offensive lineman Trevor Robinson is doubtful.
