The 20th anniversary season for the South Bend Silverhawks didn't get off to the greatest of starts---in more ways than one.
After warm temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, the Silverhawks had to host its season opener in below freezing temperatures today at the Cove.
They also had to do it against a team--The Great Lakes Loons---that was playing its first ever game and was hungry for a win.
The game started off well for the Silverhawks. With a runner on first in the 2nd, Yunesky Sanchez chopped one to third and the throw to first was off the mark, allowing Justin Brashear to score the first run of the season for South Bend. Daniel Perales followed with a single up the middle scoring Sanchez and the Hawks were up 2-0.
But the Loons bounced back in the 3rd, scoring two runs of their own to tie the game up at 2.
From there it was all Great Lakes. They scored 3 in the 6th and 4 in the 7th to record their first win in franchise history 10-3.
Game 2 of the three games series is tomorrow night at 6:30 at the Cove. Game-time for the series finale on Saturday has been moved up to 1PM.
