Stewart Remains on Sideline

Sophomore Chris Stewart remained on the sidelines and on the bike during spring football practice today.

The offensive lineman turned nose tackle injured his ankle during a drill on Friday. He has not practiced since, missing three and a half practices.

Defensive Line coach Jappy Oliver witnessed the injury when it happened and said Stewart's rolling of the ankle was substantial.

Oliver pointed out that its much more difficult for a player of Stewart's size (6'5", 340 pounds) to recover from an ankle injury as opposed to players at different positions who are much smaller.

The injury could hurt Stewart's development on the defensive side of the ball, Oliver said. Stewart was already playing catch up as a new member of the defense, let alone now missing nearly 20% of the spring practices.

Until the injury occurred, Stewart was making solid progress, according to Oliver. Since the injury, Stewart has spent the majority of practice time on a bike just away from the football field.

The Irish will have a week off of practice due to the Easter Holiday. Oliver is hoping to have Stewart back when the team resumes activities next Wednesday.
