Hall of Fame Parade Quotes
Billy Cannon, HB-LSU
On "The Run": “We were playing the best team in the nation on a Saturday night, in Baton Rouge. And when you played Ole Miss, you played against the best. I said, 'If I get a shot at this one, I am going to take it back.' I got lucky and broke about 6 or 8 tackles, and returned it.”
Dave Parks, WR-Texas Tech
On being inducted: "I was a little surprised, but it was a great thing. I got to go to a great team with a great quarterback and great line. We had a super offense; we didn’t have much defense at that time. We use to play both ways; it’s a lot easier going just one.”
Don McPherson, QB-Syracuse
“It’s a great tradition, Syracuse football, and I am just proud to be along the great line of wonderful players.”
“I think Doug Marrone is going to do a great job as our head coach and my eligibility would only be an embarrassment to the program.”
“I was proud to be there at a time when we were 2-9 when I got there and by the time we left we were undefeated.”
Jay Novacek, TE-Wyoming
“One of the things that happens when you go and have a great school like Wyoming, have a great coaching staff, great players around you, and that small college that nobody seems to know about, its just awesome to be here. It’s awesome to understand that we played pretty good football out there and to be able to represent that is an honor for me.”
“All of a sudden, Troy, I hear that he’s in with me; that has been the best thing. It’s been so good being around him all week.”
John Cooper, Coach-Tulsa, ASU, Ohio St
On today: “One of the best days of my life, other than getting married and having children. This is the greatest honor you can receive. The people here have been great, and it’s a great end to an outstanding year.”
Lou Holtz, Head Coach-William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota Notre Dame, South Carolina
“It’s incredible, I never envisioned anything like this, the reception of the people has beyond my wildest dreams.”
“I’m just a plain individual that was very blessed to have a lot of good people with me; athletes, athletics directors, etc.”
On the Notre Dame team headed to Japan: “Rudy would be our star, and Charlie Weis has more speed then our running backs.”
Pat Fitzgerald, LB-Northwestern
“I understand that I am back in South Bend, and the last time I was here, it was a beautiful day for the Wildcats. As a head coach it’s a great opportunity for our football program to show that anything can happen.”
Randall McDaniel, OG-Arizona St
“It’s an excellent day, a great day. I can’t believe it, it’s a wonderful experience. It’s hard to put into words.”
“It’s always great when you can go in with someone that saw you play or knew about you or had something to do with where you are today.”
Reuben Mayes, RB-Washington St
On his single-game rushing record: “Good blocking and their linebackers weren’t playing up to close. So we kept on running draws and we had to win the game because it was raining outside. We kept running and running and running and suddenly there is a record.”
Roger Brown, DT-Maryland Eastern Shore
“It feels like I am at the top of the world right now; it feels fantastic. It's exciting to come from such a small school and to be honored like this. Its like going to heaven and coming back and starting all over again.”
Ron Simmons, NG-Florida St
“It has sunk in yet, I think somewhere down the line, years to come that it will.”
“It is such a great honor to come in here among other great guys that have already been inducted, the guys I am going in with, and the guys to come, it’s just a great honor.”
On becoming a professional wrestler: “Once I finished with football, I just felt that I didn’t have enough of beating up myself, so what better way to continue the pounding then pro wrestling.”
On the one word to describe the day…. “Damn!”
Thurman Thomas, RB-Oklahoma St
“We saw Arnold Tucker this morning. He played in 1945 and 1946, and it’s just something amazing that brings that honor in saying, 'Wow, we really are special people.'"
“The thing that stays fresh in my mind from Oklahoma State is how in the heck did I keep Barry Sanders on the bench for 3 years. We were on the field for 2 plays and I lost 4 yards and he lost 3 yards.”
Troy Aikman, QB-UCLA
“Obviously going to the hall of fame is pretty awesome and I had never been to South Bend, so I was real excited about coming here and seeing the campus of Notre Dame. This place has so much history for college football and to have played college football, I was just looking forward to being a part of it.”
On finishing his sociology degree this past February: “I had promised my mom when I left that I would eventually get my degree and I gave it a lot of attempts over the years and just never got it finished. Finally I was able to, went through the ceremony and I have been proud of a lot of things in my life and been fortunate to do a lot of things, this ranks right up there with the rest of them.”
“To get to go in the hall of fame with him (Novacek) is very meaningful.”
Wilbur Marshall, LB-Florida
“To be here is very exciting, it’s something that you never think would happen. You play the game just to have fun and be a part of the community, so when something like this happens you just have to let it soak in.”
On the Bears fans coming out to support him: “All down the strip, '85 Bears. At least they remember.”
