Until Tuesday night, three players in the history of Notre Dame baseball had been taken in the first round of the MLB draft. In 1965, catcher Ken Plesha was picked 17th by the White Sox. In 1998, the Astros took pitcher Brad Lidge also with the 18th choice. Aaron Heilman was drafted 18th by the Mets in 2001.
Now there is another first round pick out of Notre Dame. AJ Pollock, the Irish center fielder heard his named called by the Diamondbacks with the 17th pick in Tuesday's draft.
A question on many minds is whether or not Pollock will soon play back in South Bend as one of the Diamondbacks single-A franchises plays at Coveleski Stadium. Most of the time, a rookie will play in rookie ball but there have been occasions when a first-year player will start on the single-A level.
