LaPorte County could soon be home to a new $25-million dollar, indoor hockey and event arena.

Just last week, the owner of the Chicago Wolves Professional Hockey team presented a plan to the LaPorte County Council that could ice a “shot on goal.”

It's still in the very early stages, but according to the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), the owner wants to move on this pretty quickly.

The facility would serve primarily has a hockey arena for a new minor league hockey team in the area-- but it would also be available for other sporting and concert events.

It's the job of the LaPorte County CVB to attract tourism dollars to the area-- and officials say a new proposed 5500 seat hockey/sporting arena would do just that.

“This is an economic injection that every county needs and to have it come into LaPorte County is outstanding,” says Jason Miller, LaPorte County CVB.

The proposed indoor arena would be located in one of two locations: at 421 and I-94 OR at Purdue North-Central, along 421 and the Indiana Toll Road.

“This truly is the crossroads of America in this county because we have so much traffic that goes through this area, it's a perfect place,” adds Miller.

Miller says Buddy Meyers (Chicago Wolves owner) proposed the idea eight or nine years ago-- and late last year the idea was resurrected.

“He's very passionate about this, he's been working on it for a long time, he's brought the right people together here, for a public/private partnership if you will,” explains Jack Arnett, Executive Director for the LaPorte County CVB.

On top of being home to a minor league hockey team, the arena would host many other events-- from high school and college sports, to music concerts, meetings, and possibly the 2016 Olympic games.

“As we've been told, a lot of these athletes are going to need facilities in which to practice and gather and meet, and a facility like this would fit in perfectly for that,” says Arnett. “We absolutely think there's a need, this is a family-orientated venue that will be received well by the community and we think we can move it forward.”

“If this comes to fruition, it's going to be huge, not only for LaPorte County, but for northwest Indiana as a whole, we're excited,” adds Miller.

Right now, the LaPorte County CVB and arena officials are looking at getting a second sporting tenant in the building-- whether it's the WNBA League or another type of team.

Newscenter 16 also made a call to Buddy Meyers, for his comment on the project. He was not able to return the call, but his spokesman, Val Belmonte, says they're looking forward to being a positive part of the community.

Officials expect the arena will likely bring a few hundred jobs to the area. The LaPorte County CVB also expects a positive trickle effect on local hotels, restaurants, and shops.
