Irish softball team tops Louisville in Big East semis

As the innings were flying by early in the semifinal contest between No. 2 seed Notre Dame and No. 3 seed Louisville, it seemed like neither team would push a run past the stingy defenses. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Irish bats caught fire, coupled with costly errors by Louisville allowing Notre Dame to build towards a 3-0 win at the BIG EAST Softball Championship at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

The Fighting Irish will face No. 1 seed DePaul for The Big East Championship Saturday at 5pm. The game will be broadcasted on CBS College Sports.

It will be the 9th Big East Championship final for the Irish.

Things started to unravel for Louisville in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Irish were able to score three runs on three hits to take a 3-0 lead in the game. Timely doubles by juniors Heather Johnson and Christine Lux, coupled with a pair of Cardinal errors in the field, helped Notre Dame push across the games’ first runs.

Senior Brittney Bargar earned the shutout win for Notre Dame, improving her record to 22-10 this season. The senior pitched the complete game for the Irish allowing no earned runs and just three hits.

Notre Dame second baseman Linda Kohan led the Irish at the plate going 3-for-3 with one run scored. Right fielder Dani Miller also impressed for Notre Dame, batting 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI. Louisville was short on offense, getting only three hits.
