The South Bend Silver Hawks started their longest home stand of the season with a victory, taking game one from the Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-1 on Tuesday night behind a stellar pitching performance from Wade Miley.
Miley (WP, 1-1) allowed just one unearned run over 6.2 innings, striking out seven on the way to his first victory of the season. While Miley allowed seven hits in the game, he came up time and time again with big pitches to get out of jams, stranding seven runners through the first six innings.
For the Kernels, starter Tyler Chatwood (LP, 1-1) was victimized by his control problems. Chatwood entered the game having held opponents scoreless through his first 11.0 innings of the year. However, Chatwood walked four batters in his 5.0 innings tonight, with two of the four walks coming in to score.
In the third inning, the Silver Hawks turned what could have been a triple play into their first run of the game. With bases loaded and nobody out, Alfredo Marte flew out to right field for the first out of the play. Chris Davis tagged at third, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out on the play. The Kernels catcher hopped up and threw to second, getting Brendan Duffy in a rundown between the bases. Meanwhile, Reynaldo Navarro scored after tagging from second, just after Duffy dove into first avoiding the tag.
Nelson Gomez had an RBI double in the fourth for the 2-0 lead, and Alberto Diaz added an RBI double in the seventh.
Cedar Rapids got their lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Roberto Lopez against Bayron Zepeda (ND), with the run being charged to Miley. T.J. Hose (SV, 2) pitched out of a jam in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
The Silver Hawks and Kernels continue the three game series Wednesday night with a 6:30 PM first pitch at The Cove. RHP Ryan Cook (3-0, 2.16 ERA) will try to remain perfect for South Bend, while RHP Ryan Chaffee (0-0, 3.60 ERA) looks for his first decision for Cedar Rapids.
