South Bend Washington may be 26-0 and they may have Skylar Diggins, but Ben Davis will be no push over when the two teams meet for the 4A girl's basketball state championship Saturday at 8pm at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Like the Panthers, the Giants are undefeated (29-0) and are ranked number one in the nation in a major poll. Ben Davis is tops by USA Today while Washington is #1 in the ESPN poll.
Bottom line---Ben Davis is pretty good.
"Pretty good?" Panther standout Skylar Diggins asks with a smile. "They're really good."
"I hear people calling this the mythical national championship. I'm excited to play such a good ball club."
The Giants are so good they feature three players already committed to Division One schools with a few more potentially on the way.
"Ben Davis has an unbelievable team," Panther head coach Maurice Scott says. "They're unbelievably athletic, a lot of speed and can get up and down the floor."
Leading the way for Ben Davis is Penn State bound point guard Alex Bentley, who scored 23 points in last Saturday's Semi-State win. Bentley averages 15.6 points per game.
Washington's Karis Phillips will guard Bentley.
"I'm very confident in my defense," the 5'2" Phillips says. "I know a lot of my opponents look at me like, 'she's so little,' but I'm very tough."
And Karis has a little bit of an advantage. Her sister Emily already plays at Penn State, where Bentley is headed. And Emily has been giving her little sister some big tips.
"She's like, 'Alli is my teammate next year but you'll always be my little sister,'" Phillips explains with a smile. "I feel comfortable with that."
DeAirra Goss, a 5'10" senior forward, will play for Western Michigan in the fall while 5'11" junior guard Dee Dee Williams is verbally committed to Purdue.
The Giants' strength is in defense. They give up just 35 points per game.
"I think you are going to see a high powered defense team against a high powered offense team," Scott says. "We're going to see what happens and how it shakes out."
The Panthers will depart for Indy Friday morning at 8:30. They will hold a pep rally at the high school prior to leaving.
WNDU will be at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday and have reports for on Newscenter 16 at 6 and 11 on Saturday night.
