Despite a new head coach this season, it's success as usual for the Washington girls basketball team.
On Saturday, the Lady Panthers will face Pendleton Heights at 3pm at Plymouth High School in the 4A Semi-State. A victory sends Washington to the state championship game for the 4th straight season.
1st year Panther coach Maurice Scott certainly has a different style of coaching than Marilyn Coddens, as we found out when we were granted an all-access pass to Wednesday's practice.
Coach Scott put on the microphone and didn't hold back, yelling at his players when they made mistakes.
"Stop."
"Are You Serious?"
"Please Get Better."
Those are the phrases Scott likes to belt out the most to his team during workouts.
"Get Better" is his signature phrase. Players say they hear it multiple times at practice and also a lot during games.
"I will call a timeout just to say, 'Will you get better,'" Scott says with a smile. "It's all I'm going to say."
"I never plan it, don't think about it but when I need to say it, it just comes out."
Scott's stepdaughter has been hearing the phrase since she was 11 years old when her step-dad first began coaching her. She says you can see it coming.
"And you kind of sense it," Diggins explains. "You're like 'aww man, I made a mistake."
And then here it comes.
"I think I'm the player he picks on the most," senior Jasmine Watson says with a chuckle.
But Watson is quick to point out she's ok with it. Maybe not at the time when it happens---it bugs her of course--but in the long run, she understands it does make her better.
And five minutes after telling Jasmine to get better, Scott is praising Watson for a job well done.
Watson's facial expression is priceless, still annoyed at the yelling session from a few minutes before. But again, Watson says, it's that much more motivating.
Probably the highlight of the practice was seeing a beautiful no look behind the head pass by Rakeesha Lane for a basket.
"Good pass! Good job Rakeesha," Scott yells out in praise. "Hey, do you have eyes behind there?"
"Golly. That kind of looked like one of my passes."
And Scott isn't afraid to show off his stuff. In fact, it's the number one way he teaches. Scott puts on the shorts and sneakers and often practices with his players to lead by example.
Its a style that really works for this team because they can appreciate seeing that their coach knows what he is talking about.
Practice concludes with a team huddle and a reminder to not look ahead to the state finals.
"We've got one game before we go to the big game," Scott tells his players.
