The price Notre Dame may have to pay to get rid of Charlie Weis just keeps on getting higher.
As we first told you on NewsCenter 16 at 6 on Sunday, a source very close to the situation tells WNDU that the price to buy Weis out of the remaining seven years of his contract is around $20 million.
The source also says that Notre Dame does not appear to have the money right now and could be using the next week to try and raise more funds from alums.
Following Notre Dame's 38-3 loss to USC on Saturday night, Irish Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said that he would not meet with Weis until a week from Monday.
Swarbrick also said at the time that money would not be an issue, but it appears that may not be entirely accurate.
Money, however, is not the only factor, There are a number of issues that are in play right now on whether the Irish decide to retain Charlie Weis for a fifth season.
Weis is currently on the West Coast recruiting, as was the plan all along. NewsCenter 16 Sports Director Jeff Jeffers spoke with Weis Sunday morning and says that everything is being treated as business as usual from Charlie's end.
Weis is 28-21 in four seasons as Notre Dame's head coach. Fifteen of those losses have come in the last two years, the most over a 2-year span in school history. Weis' winning percentage at Notre Dame is now below both Bob Davie and Ty Willingham.
The Irish alum is just 4-10 against ranked opponents, but three of those four wins came in Weis' first year and before he received his huge contract extension midway through the season.
The Irish are 6-6 and have lost four of their last five games. They are waiting an invitation to a bowl game.
