Brandon Walker missed a 52 yard field goal in the final seconds as Notre Dame blew a 23-10 leading, losing 24-23 to lowly Syracuse Saturday on senior day at the stadium.
Notre Dame drops to 6-5 with the loss heading into the season finale at USC.
Syracuse entered the game with just a 2-8 record and fired their head coach Greg Robinson last Sunday. Robinson was coaching in his 2nd last game for Syracuse, and won for just the 10th time in four seasons.
"I feel miserable, absolutely miserable for the seniors," Irish head coach Charlie Weis said after the game. "I feel sick to my stomach."
Notre Dame was inside the 25 yard line three times and came away with just three points. ND's two touchdowns both came on Jimmy Clausen 35 yard strikes to Golden Tate.
The first gave the Irish a 13-10 lead heading into halftime. The second extended the lead to 20-10.
Tate said after the game he felt nor saw an emotion on the sidelines throughout the game. There was emotion after the game however as seniors and even captains were even crying. And in post-game interviews, the captains were devastated.
Walker made three field goals on the day, while also missing three. The first missed field goal came after the Irish blocked a punt in the 3rd quarter, but it wasn't his fault as holder Eric Maust mishandled the snap.
After Antown Bailey scored on a 26 yard touchdown to pull Syracuse within 23-17, Walker missed a 49 yard field goal.
Syracuse then took advantage of a 3rd and one pass interference call against Harrison Smith. Cameron Dantley threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Donte Davis with 42 seconds left to give the Orange a 24-23 lead.
The loss for Notre Dame is their 14th in two seasons, the most ever over two years.
Weis received a fair share of questions after the game about where he and the program are at.
"I never pass on tough questions," Weis began to explain. "I think it's really important for me not to be making big picture analyses after a tough loss."
"I think big picture analysis questions are things you better sit back and reflect on rather than just come up and give an answer off the spur of the moment. I don't do things that way."
Weis was then directly asked if he was concerned about his job status. Weis said, "No."
Next up for the Irish, at USC next Saturday.
"You can wallow around and sit there and feel sorry for yourself," Weis said. "If you do, you'll go out to L.A. and they'll humiliate you."
