It's Notre Dame!

Skylar Diggins didn't leave much time to spare before deciding where she will continue her basketball career in college.

The nation's number three rated recruit from South Bend Washington finally announced her decision late Wednesday night at the high school.

The announcement came after Diggins explained how she felt about the process.

"I feel blessed. To be able to choose (between Notre Dame, Stanford and Penn State), I feel very appreciative," Diggins said.

Dramatic as she is on the floor, the announcement could have only come in the same fashion. Diggins stood up from the table at which she was seated, and unbuttoned her school letter jacket, revealing a white t-shirt with "Irish" in green letters and navy trim, and the number "4" underneath.

The unveiling brought about cheers and tears from Diggins' family, knowing that they will get to see her play for the next four years underneath the Golden Dome.

In fact, Diggins choice revolved around the fact that her family would get to see her play.

"When we played the other night, I looked over and saw my family in the stands," Diggins said. "I was like 'Aw yeah, I love this feeling.' I couldn't go anywhere else but here."

When asked if she knew that she would have her high school number in college, Diggins replied, "Oh yeah. I'll have my number four next year."

Non-football recruits had until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night before the early signing period ended to make their decision. Otherwise, they would have to wait until April to officially declare.

Diggins was in attendance at the Irish women's basketball game earlier in the night with the rest of her family.

And after the game, Diggins told Coach McGraw and the Notre Dame players her decision in a very unique way as well. Diggins took the box score from Wednesday's 96-61 win, and asked everyone where her name would appear on the stat sheet next season.

The Irish locker room exploded in excitement.

Her final three choices were Notre Dame, Stanford and Penn State.

Diggins has led Washington to three straight 4A State Championship game appearances including a gold medal win in 2007. She led the state in scoring last year as a junior.

She is just as talented in the classroom as she is on the court. Skylar is ranked in the top 10 in her class and plans to study pre-med at Notre Dame. Diggins has ambitions of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

We'll hear from Muffet McGraw Thursday on Newscenter 16 at 6.

I am glad that we can have such a wonderful young lady on the westside. I am glad that my daughter has such a good role model to look up to. Congrats Skyler and good luck. Ever onward!!

yeah-typo on the Cardinal....but how many people come to ND to build their game?...that's my question. Play the game and know. Most of you are not knowledgeable on how this works anyway. Yes, and ND should be in total violation for all of the "hand-holding" they have done with her. That's why there are rules...ND has basically shown her how to thumb her nose at the NCAA with all of this "in attendance," seats front row that they are not paying for and so forth. IU had phone calls...Muffet is way...way ...way over on the visit list according to the rules...even other coaches have commented so. Cart rides with Coquese and Niele....probably scrabble at the McGraw house.

Sklyar also has her own set of rules that she gets away with that the other students to not! She is the only one who didn't have to attend volleyball practice!

I am glad she picked ND, now maybe I'll get a chance to watch her play more. Back in the 60's my Mother wouldn't let me go to the westside of town to watch a game at Washington. She thought the area was to bad. Now its 46 years later and now my wife won't let me go to the westside of town to watch Washington play. She says its to bad of an area for an old man to go to. I always had to follow Washington when they played an away game or listen to them on the radio. I can hardly wait to watch her play for the Irish and wish her well.

I'm no ND fan, but good for her. I especially liked the fact that she emphasized her choice of major, pre-med. She will have many opportunities in life, and hopefully will be a good role model for a generation of young local women.

Tracy-its could'nt care less.meaning could not. Maybe if you cared about anything you would get yourself an ooportunity like this young woman. So sad to have such a pitiful attitude. Go Skylar and ND girls hoops. So exciting to get to have your family there. Keep up the grades so we don't have to read from such ignoramuses, that we could'nt care less about!

Posted by: SB on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:05 AM
why do all these ppl have to hate..i personally thiunk there mad because a 17 year old girl will make more money then they ever will shooting a ball..You say your adults but why are you trying to bash a teenager for doing something she loves to do..i suggest you teach your kids some athletic ability so i can talk bad upon them...grow up

Chose McGraw over Vandivier, an olympic gold medalist? Some thought process. Great to stay around here, but will your game get better so you have staying power in the WNBA? J. Batteast's shadow does not prove well...no staying power for these northern Indiana girls. STANDFORD has pre-med. I guess she was probably scared to leave poop-butville. thank God for Sydney Smallbone who had the guts to go and get trained in the game........Anyway, good luck, let's see how Muffit changes her tune when you are ON the team. Take a deep breath....it's just begun! Women playing ball...not girls. Best wishes diggy...lets see if you can crash this level!!!

thats really good to hear... can she help the football team out as well?

Posted by: Lauren on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Awesome. :) Can't wait to watch her play there.

Posted by: Steve on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:58 PM
Absolutely brilliant news. I don't know Skylar but feel so proud of her, so imagine what her parents, family and friends must feel. I really hope that coach McGraw can lead the women's basketball team to No 1 in the nation. But i must disagree with Scott @ 11:09 am, women's soccer are the best athletics team at ND. It's up to basketball to prove me wrong.

Posted by: Tracy Location: SB on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:52 PM
I'd like to congratulate all students that make it to college. I just don't get why this particular student is any better than all the others that go to college.

Posted by: anne v Location: sbn on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:02 PM
You know Tracy, that's the difference between you and some OTHER GIRLS. Most of those other girls are making a difference and they are FOCUSING on those people on the corners. Skylar and her family have made such a difference in so many peoples lives. Skylar and those other girls have proven with hard work that you can succeed. They are role models for the young girls today. What is so terrible about that. It's nice to see the girls from the WHS basketball program succeed. We get such negative press about this side of town. It's nice to read something positive. Once again congrats Skylar. So proud of you. And way to go Mo and Renee (and junior) Job well done. I get compliments all the time about how well Ashley turned out. And alot of that has to do with you guys. Now bring that state championship back home to the west side.

Skylar... I hope you don't read the ignorant comments that the ppl are posting on here. You have been such a great role model for my daughter, and since choosing ND for college, i have promised my daughter tickets to every home game. You are very talented and blessed. Good luck and keep up the good work. Your parents have to be extremely proud of you. I am. take care

Skylar Diggins@ ND--Congrats to you. This is another great example of what a good education, a supoortive family and the drive to be successful can do!

I am not a Notre Dame fan and actually have no interest in girls basketball BUT.......I was intrigued while seeing Skylar on the news yesterday at how beautiful she was! She should go out for Miss USA or Miss America! She has it all, talent, smarts, and beauty! Good luck to you in all your endeavors Skylar!

Posted by: Ken Bartkowiak Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Skylar, Congratulations to you and your decision to continue your unbelievable sports career at ND. My daughters, who were team-mates of yours at WHS on the volleyball team, think the world of you as does the entire WHS community. You are a very blessed individual!

Posted by: Carrie Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 02:10 PM
It's pretty pathetic that there are people out there "picking" on a young child. She hasn't even graduated high school yet. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Be happy for her. She is going somewhere with her life. We need more young ladies in Michiana with her knowledge and attitude! Once again I wish WNDU would address a "registering" system in order to post comments. Also, they need to remove comments that are demeaning and are only aimed to verbally hurt others.

Posted by: Joe Location: Goshen on Nov 20, 2008 at 02:08 PM
The big drawback to the internet is giving a voice to morons who would never say the things they do in any other situation. This news could not possibly affect Timmy and Tracy in any way possible. For them to comment negatively it screams jealousy. Nobody will ever know who these two losers are but I've seen Skylar in plenty of national media sources. I only wish women's basketball had a higher profile so more people would take notice. That doesn't matter though. I think Skylar will reflect on this community in a very positive way for decades to come.

Congrats SD, This is a big step in your life. ND is a great college, you will have the best of both world. You're going to get a great education and you will have a great athletic career. I haven't known you for that long, but the one thing that I can say about you is that you are very competitive on and off the court. You are very down to earth person and I can't wait to see you do big things next year. I wish you and your family nothing but the best. Keep God First & continue to work hard and remember you're in control of your future. Remember whatever you want in life you can have if you work hard for it. Because you have all the pieces to the puzzle:God, A Great Family, Good Health, Talent, Right School, and last, but not least People who believe in you that want to see you do big things in life. Continue to smile and counting your blessing because you still have a lot to accomplish in life. But for now stay focus on bringing that state championship trophy back to WHS. Best Wishes

I really don't care for the Irish, but now I will definatly watch them since she is playing there!!!! Congrats, you set a great example to the young girls!

Posted by: Trish on Nov 20, 2008 at 01:02 PM
For Tim and Tracy. If you don't care why did you put effort towards clicking on the story to read it. You HAVE to care.lol

I'm glad for her. Hopefully someone can make it from this area. I'm sure she will return alot to her high school as well. Merry Christmas came early.

"Sounds" like Tracy needs to have direct contact with God, especially with her comments regarding Skylar and a person on a corner. Skylar has been blessed with choices, good choices for her to pcik from for her education - and it's nice to see that once in a while a GOOD kid is placed on the news instead of all the bad stuff.. she's made a choice.....did you ever stop to think that the guy on the corner may be having unfortunate circumstances based on his decision? Or maybe his decision is to stand on the corner and scam folks for money - either can occur. I prefer to think that there are folks out there who would not scam others, however, it does occur. Are you jealous of Skylar, Tracy? Such comments that you made do tend to lead toward that type of behvior/emotion. We should take each others blessings or failings at face value.......judge not, lest ye be judged!

Posted by: KC Location: SB on Nov 20, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Congrats Skylar, keep on being the best on the court and in the class room. You are someone that my young daughters can continue to admire.

Posted by: Tim Location: SB on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:41 AM
"This is a girl who is has held a 3.5 or higher G.P.A. since 6th grade or earlier."______________ Since when do 6th graders maintain a GPA? I don't care about this pride of the bs side either.

Posted by: Scott Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:09 AM
The best athletic team at Notre Dame just got better. Congrats to skylar

Posted by: RonB Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Congratulations Skylar and I bid you God's speed as you embark upon the next phase of your life. I pray your continued success in EVERYTHING you aspire to do!!!! And continue to make us proud of you!

Congratulations Skylar! You make this WHS Alumni very proud! Also, congratulations to her parents in raising such a fine young lady. Ever Onward & GO IRISH!

Wow, big shock, considering she's been on the sideline of several football games and in the stands for several basketball games, all free of charge of course. I personally saw her and Muffet hugging and dancing on the sideline during the Pitt game. I guess she wanted to cash in on all the perks and freebies before making her announcement. It's amazing what they give to and how they treat these kids who haven't proved anything yet.

Posted by: Barb Location: da bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:30 AM
Skylar, I do hope you also picked ND for the fine education you will get, besides for the cheers that you will hear from your family in the stands. Good luck, and enjoy ND.

The Pride of the West Side!!!!!

Posted by: Jim Location: Mishawaka on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:10 AM
Congratualtions to both Skylar and ND. It should be a good fit. I wonder why a person like Tracy who says she could care less, would first read the story and then go as far as remarking in comments. Sorry that things in your life are not going as good as they could, but you should be happy that someone other than you has the opportunity to have such a fine future if she works very hard at it. She does have to work very hard academically and on the court. Hope things improve for you. Go Skylar, good for you.

Posted by: Poor Tracy on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:03 AM
Tracy it is such a shame that you do not care about South Bend youth. This is a girl who is has held a 3.5 or higher G.P.A. since 6th grade or earlier. She is the type of person to go out of her way to help anyone in need (including a man on the corner). Instead of bashing an African American female, praise her for her success. It is people like you, "that could really care less" that are the problem with this city!

Posted by: KRB Location: Plymouth on Nov 20, 2008 at 06:29 AM
I think Skylar made an excellent choice. It will be great to watch her progress at Notre Dame. Had she went elsewhere, we might not have been able to do so. She appears to be a great example for all the young girls. From what I understand, she is a great student and obviously an extremely talented BB player. Way to go Skylar! Now go have fun your senior season.

Posted by: Tracy Location: SB on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:55 AM
I could really care less. Its just another girl, making a choice. She's no more important to me than the man on the corner holding a sign asking for help. Maybe thats who we should be focusing on.

Posted by: Margaret Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:31 AM
Congratulations to Skylar and her family! You brought a lot of pride to the Westside and I'm sure you will bring even more pride to Notre Dame and to the city of South Bend. Considering your family when it came down to choosing a college says a lot about you. We wish you much, much success on and off the court! Go Skylar, Go Panthers, Go Irish!!!!

Posted by: Joe Location: Goshen on Nov 20, 2008 at 12:50 AM
Best news I've heard all day. I hope they have Midnight Madness next year so we can see her play at ND as soon as possible.

Awesome, we have not been to a Womens ND game before, but that will change

good luck sky.i go get my season tickets

Posted by: Pat Location: Shenandoah on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Good Choice(all three schools are excellent) to attend ND. I want to wish Miss Diggins and the Lady Panthers success this season. I have not seen Tenneessee this season(saw ND beat LSU on ESPN), so I have a question. Is Sidney Smallbone starting for the Vols this season?

Posted by: anne varner Location: sbn on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Way to go Skylar. Even though Ashley plays for Valpo, I will now have a good reason to keep my season tickets to ND.
