To the Buchanan Bucks and head coach Joe Austin, a 2-0 record isn't very important anymore.
But Buchanan takes their undefeated record to Berrien Springs Friday night in our Pizza Hut Spotlight game of the week. It's the first Lakeland Conference action for both teams, and Buchanan is no longer thinking about its first two wins because they know conference play is when the season really begins.
"It doesnt mean anything to us right now. We're concentrating everything on Berrien Springs," Austin said. "We know it will be an outstanding opportunity, and it will be a dogfight."
The Bucks got their 2-0 record through a potent rushing attack, and now have to replicate it without two of their best players -- sophomore QB Bryan Kuntz and senior FB Drew Medlin.
Both players were lost in the 1st half of week two's win over Bronson.
Senior Clinton Orr will likely have a larger role now that Kuntz and Medlin are out. Orr racked up 372 yards and five touchdowns in Buchanan's first two games, but has had less than 20 carries in each game.
"I really want to win the conference. It doesn't mean anything until you win the Lakeland Conference," Orr said. "We know what it's going to take to win the Lakeland; it's not going to be easy."
Berrien Springs is 0-2 but has played two teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective divisions. They were also without their starting quarterback in week two, but he's now back.
Coach Austin knows the Shamrocks will be out to right the ship on their season.
"We know we have our work cut out for us when we show up there in Berrien Springs," Austin said. "Those guys will be geeked up to play the Bucks."
Kickoff is 7pm on Friday at Berrien Springs.
