It wasn't pretty, but the Silver Hawks aren't complaining.
South Bend and West Michigan combined for 11 errors, but in the end the Silver Hawks won 5-3 at the Cove, taking game one of the best of three playoff series.
The series now shifts to West Michigan for game two on Thursday. Game three, if necessary, is scheduled for Friday in Grand Rapids.
Many thought the game will be a pitcher's duel between South Bend ace Jarrod Parker and the Midwest League's top hurler, Jon Kibler.
But fielding behind them produced plenty of runs in the 1st inning.
West Michigan jumped out in front with two early runs, capitalizing on two early Silver Hawks errors. South Bend responded with four runs in the bottom half.
After that both pitchers got into a groove. Combined, the two gave just three earned runs on the night.
Parker went six strong, giving up three runs (two earned) to pick up his first professional playoff win.
Sean Coughlin was 4-4 with 2 RBI for the Hawks.
If the Silver Hawks win the series, they will host game two of the 2nd round Sunday at 4pm at the Cove.
