This week is the pre-season edition of Countdown to Kickoff, which includes a one-on-one interview with the head coach of the Irish football team, Charlie Weis.

After going 3-9 last year, one of the worst seasons in the school’s storied history, the Notre Dame football team is looking ahead to the new season. Coach Charlie Weis says he has been working to leave the past behind, and hopes that 2007 is all but forgotten.

“I think that you realize that, well, you could sit there and talk about the last two games, we won the last two games, and you can try to just play off that one. Or try to take that year and sit there and say, ‘OK, evaluate the year and then we’re moving forward. I think that anytime you wallow around, you know feeling sorry for yourself or looking for pity, it’s not happening,” explains Weis.

The Irish depth chart this year is full of young players, and with a young team comes an extra set of challenges. But Weis says although they may be young, they aren’t without experience.

“I think that it’s not really about what year they are, with exception of the incoming freshmen, it’s how much experience playing they have and I think that because we played so many of those young guys it’s not nearly the same as if you hadn’t played them yet, and now they’re gonna play for the first time.”

It's not all business for Weis, who says that the best part of the job, even after a rough season, is the players.

“These kinds are such good kids, I mean you very seldom hear about any of these guys doing anything seriously wrong, they go to class, they’re like what you want your kid to be like.”

What was it you said to someone else, Rabies? Oh yeah. I wasn't talking to you. Burned...as usual. As an ND fan, I'm sure you are used to it. ND Fan knows what I say is true. We are talking about real life, not your fantasy online life.

Wow, he is too nervous to run his mouth about ND so he tries to attack ND Fan because he thinks he knows who he is....I think we see who the real dork is, at least NDF had (has) a job. Go wring out a bar towel in your glass, give you that one on the house. HA! clown status...CONFIRMED!

Now AJ, yes we have the "smartest" players, I mean, they go to ND, not some community or state college (no offense to any alum, I myself attend community college) but they are young and learning. Agreed in regards to mgt. Why you say? Because we have young talent that needs leadership and Charlie needs to step it up or step on out! GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!! or like some schools say GEAUX IRISH.....haha

meltingman, did you see the Irish play last season? I would love to see those 11 wins happen. But, I will wait and see what gives on Sept. 6th before I go that far. A solid 8 wins in my book with a hope for more. USC, BC and Michigan state are the real tests this season. But lets get SDSU in the rear view before we start giving high fives.

An improved, more experienced team. Another great, nationally recognized recruiting class. A schedule we can actually win with (not loaded with away games early in the year at tough programs). Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Boston College all having lost key players, and not returning many starters (and Michigan installing a brand new offense). San Diego State, Stanford, North Carolina, Washington, Navy, Syracuse, hey, even Mark May gave us these victories! I would also put Pittsburgh in the "games we should win" category. That only leaves, well, uh, USC. That game aside, 11 VICTORIES this year. Why all the doubt?

Coach will have this squad firing on all cylinders. I don't think a BCS bid is in the cards for 08' (I hope it is) but that dog will hunt in 09'.

If there is not dramatic improvement this year (8-4 min.) then Charlie should be shown the door. Its his players completely and his coaches. If the OL shows up we have a running game so use it. I hope with Haywood calling the plays we will be more consistent than the last 3 years. GO IRISH

Settle, aj. It will be better. As with any NEW team, which is pretty much what we were working with last year in key positions, there are glitches. No one expected as many as we had last year, but now that they have hit rock bottom, they know what they need to do. They need to scrap and get the ball down the field. We have a heavier O Line which was most of our problem last year. Now that Charlie has eaten some humble pie, I would hope that the talent AND management is there to make the team work AS a team. 8 wins.

No excuses. Can we do something this season? This is the 3rd great recruiting class in a row now for ND. These are ALL Charlies players. These are the SMARTEST great athletes in the country. And we sucked last year is not an acceptable reason for ND to be ok with mediocre. The talent is there is the managment ?
