The Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks announced today that the team will open training camp at Notre Dame.
All Blackhawks practices will be held at Compton Family Ice Arena from Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 15, before returning to the United Center on Monday, Sept. 16, for the team’s annual Training Camp Festival.
“We are thankful that Notre Dame is allowing us to host our camp at their new state-of-the-art, world-class facility,” said Blackhawks Vice President/General Manager and Notre Dame alum Stan Bowman. “Opening camp on the road offers our players and coaching staff a unique team bonding atmosphere. We look forward to bringing Blackhawks hockey to our fans in Northwest Indiana.”
Mike McNeill played hockey at SB St. Joe and Notre Dame. He's now the programming manager at The Comp and helped put this all together.
"We're very excited," McNeill said during a camp for kids at Compton Family Ice Arena Monday. "They obviously had a great year from start to finish--a really sweet playoff run and I think from a community standpoint, from everyone in our area--a chance to see them in our facility is something everyone is looking forward to."
McNeill says this is something Notre Dame and the Blackhawks have been working on for a while and that its pretty cool that it worked for it to happen coming off a Stanley Cup victory because that just brings an added boast to youth hockey in Michiana.
"It's a huge step," McNeill explained. "We saw four years ago (when the Blackhawks last won the Cup) a bump in our youth hockey numbers because we have a lot of families in our youth hockey association that are Chicago Blackhawk season ticket holders."
"You combine that with the Olympics coming up this year, wonderful facilities we have in South Bend and a great team we have here at Notre Dame, we think youth hockey is going in a very positive direction."
A complete training camp schedule, including practice times, will be released at a later date.
