King of the Putback: Keel leads Triton to state finals

Just call him the King of the Putback.

For the second Saturday in a row, Colton Keel came up with a huge putback in the closing seconds to lift Triton to a huge win.

This time it sends Triton to the 1A State Championship for the first time in school history as the Trojans beat Lafayette Central Catholic 52-51 at Lafayette Jefferson High School on Saturday.

Triton will face Indy Lutheran at 10:30am next Saturday at Conseco Field House in the 1A Finals.

After Central Catholic's Daniel Mills hit a fadeway jumper with 20 seconds left, the Trojans advanced the ball to midcourt and called a timeout with under 10 seconds left in the game.

AJ Harrison took posession of the inbounds pass, drove the lane and missed. Keel was there for the putback with three seconds left to give Triton the lead.

Central Catholic missed a shot at the buzzer that would have won them the game.

Keel also dropped in a putback at the buzzer in last Saturday's semifinal win over Morgan Township. That was also off a Harrison missed shot.

Keel also made a putback to close out the half in Saturday's win that put Triton up 25-24 at the break.

Central Catholic took a 37-36 lead with three minutes left in the 3rd.

Triton regained the lead 41-40 heading into the 4th. That was the 12th lead change of the game.

The Trojans built the lead to 48-42, which was the largest lead of the game for either team before LCC came back.

Troy McIntryre scored 12 points for Triton while Harrison and Jake Everett each added 8.

Triton previously reached Semi-State in 1965 and 2000, but lost both times.

The Trojans lost in the sectional finals last year by two points to eventual state champion Oregon-Davis.

They started this season with a 16-0 record, including a win over Plymouth in the second game of the season.
