The 1978 Notre Dame men's basketball team, the only squad in Irish history to ever reach the Final 4, was honored at halftime of Sunday's Notre Dame basketball game.
Digger Phelps was coach of that team which overcame a heart breaking one-point overtime loss to rival DePaul at the Joyce Center by blowing out the Blue Demons by 20 points in the NCAA Quarterfinals to reach the Final 4.
The Irish entered the Final 4 with a 23-6 record before losing to Duke 90-86. Notre Dame then lost to Arkansas by two points in the consolation game.
Phelps thanked the fans and said they were the reason his team was able to major the magical run 30 years ago.
He then turned to the students and told them they were the best student body in the country and urged them to keep it up the rest of the season.
