He's still the best and no one is even close. Austin Carr finished his basketball career at Notre Dame over 30 years ago and no player since then as ever come close to having the impoact that Carr did on not only Irish basketball but college basketball.
When Carr came out of Washington, D.C. to Notre Dame, he began a career would end with 2,560 points with an average of 34.5 per game. He was unstoppable nearly every time he took the floor. He could go outside, inside and everywhere in between. This is hype or the fond recollections of an Irish fan, this is fact.
Carr still holds the NCAA record for most points in a tournament game when he dropped 51 on the Bobcats of Ohio U. Carr averaged an incredible 50 points per game in seven NCAA tourney games. That's is a record that won't be approached let alone broken.
What adds to the amazement is that Carr played before the three-point shot. Can you imagine what he would have averaged with that extra point ?
Carr went on to a successful NBA career with the Cavaliers. His jersey is retired and he now works for the franchise.
If you have tickets to the Pitt-ND game, you'll get a chance to see a living legend not only of Notre Dame but of the game of college basketball.
