Defending 4A State Champion South Bend Washington is headed back to Semi-State following a 73-56 win over Elkhart Memorial in the 4A Regional Championship at Valparaiso High School.
This was Washington's 2nd win over Elkhart Memorial this season. The Panthers also eliminated Memorial from Regionals last year.
Washington is now 22-2 on the season. The Panthers only two losses came to teams from Illinois and Kentucky. Washington has not lost to an Indiana team since the 1st game of the last season.
And the team that last beat them in Indiana, Fort Wayne South, will be Washington's opponent in next Saturday's Semi-State.
Washington defeated FW South in this year's regular season opener 73-65.
The Panthers reached the Regional finals with a 88-66 win over Michigan City in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Skylar Diggins scored 40 points to lead the way.
With the game tied at 10 in the 1st quarter, Diggins led the Panthers on a 9-0 run. The junior standout scored 14 in the 1st alone as Washington led 21-12 after one.
Washington led by 13 at the half.
Michigan City cut the lead to six in the 3rd quarter on a Ta'Kenya Nixon jumper. Nixon led the Wolves with 21 points.
But Diggins and company took over from there. Washington pushed the lead to 18 in the 3rd before leading 60-48 heading into the 4th.
Takoia Larry scored 17.
Elkhart Memorial advanced to the Regional final with a 58-53 win over Gary West Side.
Memorial trailed 13-8 after one quarter and 26-21 at the half before pushing ahead in the 3rd.
